As we welcome the New Year, it’s a perfect time to pause, breathe, and reflect on our journey. For many veterans, the path of service is marked by resilience and strength, qualities that continue to guide us through life’s transitions.
At the Healing Warriors Program, we are here to support you on this journey. Our focus is on providing holistic care that nurtures both body and mind, helping you find balance and peace. One simple yet powerful technique we encourage is Heart Focused Breathing. This practice helps create coherence between your heart and mind, fostering a sense of calm and clarity.
Here’s a quick guide to Heart Focused Breathing:
- Find a comfortable position and close your eyes if you feel comfortable doing so.
- Focus your attention on your heart area. Imagine your breath flowing in and out through your heart.
- Breathe slowly and deeply, inhaling for five seconds and exhaling for five seconds.
- Continue this breathing pattern for a minute or more, allowing your body to relax and your mind to clear.
This active breathing technique comes from the HeartMath, an organization that has deep research into the mysteries of our heart and how it supports our body in ways we never knew before. In the past year, we’ve been piloting a 1-minute Heart Focused Breathing assessment, and the results have been inspiring. Many veterans have experienced incredible shifts in their nervous system tone and improved Heart Rate Variability (HRV) after sessions. This simple assessment has shown us the profound impact that mindful breathing and heart coherence can have on overall well-being. This and many other daily habits can help shift one’s stress and anxiety and pivot into more well-being.
